Special Educational Needs

SEN Provision

‘Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities make exceptionally good progress because of the very effective way they are challenged and supported in their learning by class teachers and their assistants’

Ofsted Report January 2010

Children with special educational needs are supported and extended first and foremost by their class teacher. There is also a team of specialist staff at the school including the SENCO, an autism specialist, a literacy support teacher, and a speech and language therapist who support children. The school also has many highly trained TA’s and LSA’s in the fields of autism, occupational therapy and dyslexia. Ongoing CPD is part of the special needs programme at Corpus Christi, for staff and parents of children with special needs. The school also has links with a local autism centre and buys in support and advice from an educational psychologist.

Common Terminology

Wave 2: describes children who as well as having differentiated work in class, attend group support for a particular difficulty.

Wave 3: describes children who are named on the teacher’s planning as they require differentiation or special resources different from the typical class differentiation. These children also receive support form outside agencies or specialist staff.

Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP): describes children who have been through statutory assessment involving the Local Authority and a multi disciplinary team. These children often have an adult who works 1:1 with them within the classroom. They often follow a separate scheme of work from the class, planned specifically to meet their needs whilst challenging and extending them. This work is planned by the class teacher, SENCO and LSA. These children spend the majority of time in class, and take part in all class activities, trips and performances.
